Fikile Nxumalo, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching & Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto where she directs the Childhood Place Pedagogy Lab and is affiliated faculty in the School of the Environment. Her scholarship reconceptualizes early childhood, place-based, and environmental education in ways that respond to children’s inheritances of settler colonialism, anti-Blackness, and ecological precarity. Through conceptual, methodological, curricular, and pedagogical contributions, her work seeks to disrupt colonial erasures and anthropocentrism while reimagining environmental and climate change education with and for children. Currently she is the PI of an NFRF-funded international community co-design project developing climate-responsive school gardens that centre Indigenous and Local Ecological Knowledges.
